The Tick-Borne Encephalitis Virus is endemic in an area ranging from northern China and Japan, through far-eastern Russia to Europe. TBEV is transmitted by the bite of infected ticks (Ixodes scapularis, Ixodes ricinus and Ixodes persulcatus), or (rarely) through the non-pasteurized milk of infected cows, sheeps and goats. TBE is a viral infectious disease involving the central nervous system (CNS). The disease is incurable once manifested, so there is no specific drug therapy for TBE.
