Structure of the Membrane:
The microporous hydrophobic membrane is constructed of 2 layers of membrane materials, a white acrylic copolymer over a nylon support.It is well suited for an efficient long lasting filtration and ventilation. With an air flow rate of 4.5 LPM (3.7cm2 / 13.5 psi) this membrane offers gas exchange properties comparable to the Orange Scientific standard cap flasks. This membrane is free of cytotoxic effect.
When wanting to avoid completely cross-contamination risks and other potential contamination, one can use the Orange Scientific Filter Vented Flasks which feature caps holding an hydrophobic 0.2µm membrane; thus preventing access to the flask to bacteria and spores. The hydrophobic characteristic of the membrane insures the continuation of gas exchange even if the membrane is wetted by a liquid (the media, etc?).
Orange Scientific has developed a very special filter cap. Indeed, having the membrane spread over the entire top surface of the cap would present a risk. The user, wanting to avoid all contamination, closes the cap with force. This could result in cracking the membrane. The Orange Scientific cap holds the membrane only in its centre (see figure below), while still allowing a sufficiently sized membrane surface. This allows the user to close the cap tightly without any risk of cracking the membrane.
